I took this picture from a moving car on the highway. These are trucks parked in front of the speedway. There were many more just like them off to the right, all with those cherry pickers or whatever pointing to the sky. Someone please tell me what they are!

I’ve always assumed that the cherrypicker baskets are left up high to make them harder to tamper with, vandalize or sleep in. Of course I don’t actually know how they’re operated or what can be done from where, but my idea seems plausible enough to run with until an expert can be found and consulted.
A better question is why so many were needed at a speedway - is it off-season and they’ve rented the parking lot to the, uh, tree-trimming department?

There was some sort of activity going on at the speedway this weekend, though I’m not sure it was racing. Maybe some sort of cherrypicker truck competition?

Maybe it’s the NASCAR equivalent of skyboxes?

It could be natural disaster staging for power company crews. Expecting any hurricanes this year in Denver?

I believe that, according to Al Gore, hurricanes are due in Denver sometime soon. But since Denver gets no homeland security funds, I doubt that’s what the trucks are involved in.
