these tree-eating monsters

If it makes you feel any better, trees are rarely, if ever, cut to make paper. When wood is used to make paper, it's waste wood from making lumber.

"Really Big Things" did a show on the world's largest paper mill. They use only spruce wood from a single forest. Besides using only the waste wood from lumber operations, the number of trees in that forest is steadily increasing.

Paper-making does require energy and chemicals, so you can still feel bad that your wanton Internet shopping made JC Penny feel compelled to mail you a huge catalog, if you wish.

The Cabela's catalog is made for perusing while perched in the library with the porcelain seat. But, I guess the iPhone can fill in that gap, now.

This is also a peeve of mine. The companies seem to have no way of keeping track of Net-only customers. I contact them to get them to stop sending me catalogs, but if I ever order anything on line, the catalogs start coming again.
