Got K, Ain’t Got No Flakes

Okay, so I still haven’t gotten to the cereal switcheroo story. My evenings have been pretty busy. Tuesday night, I went up to Broomfield and had a nice dinner with RoF bandmate Greg and old friend John Ives, both of whom seem to be doing well. Greg is not making a lot of progress on his home studio (though it is framed), so who knows when Reign of Frogs will be back in business again. But you never know. Let’s see… what did I do Wednesday night? Oh yeah, caught up on TV while entering a bunch of new CDs I bought into my collection database and ripping them to iTunes and the iPod. Thursday night I worked late at the office figuring out a weird problem and didn’t feel like doing anything computer-wise once I finally got home. So, here at last, is the exciting cereal story…

Those of you who know me know that I’m extremely organized and am a routine-orientated person (though I’ve been trying to change it up a bit the last year or so). Some would even say I’m a little bit anal-retentive – ha ha, imagine that! Yes, it’s true, they say that. Anyway, besides eating a half grapefruit and drinking a glass of apple juice every morning, I also have a bowl of cereal with skim milk, NutraSweet, and some dried California (not Mediterranean) apricots. I alternate between three different cereals, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Kellogg’s Special K, and General Mills Rice Chex. (Sometimes my local Safeway is out of Rice Chex and I have to get Kellogg’s Crispix instead.) Even though I like Special K the best, I still need a little variety and so force myself to eat it only every third day.

The three cereals used to run out on a staggered schedule, but now they’re all in sync and run out the same week. So I really have to plan my grocery shopping out correctly in order to not be faced with the financial burden of buying three boxes of cereal on the same trip. Cereal is more expensive than gasoline.

Anyway, sometime last week, I ran out of Corn Flakes. I got the new box out of the pantry and poured a bowl full. It looked weird. My first thought was “Kellogg’s has changed the look of Corn Flakes!” (This is not without precedence, as a couple of years ago they changed Special K so that instead of uniformly shaped small round dimpled flakes, it is now flatter flakes of various shapes and sizes.) My second thought was “No that’s ridiculous. Plus, it looks a lot like Special K. I must’ve pulled out the Special K box instead.” (I was also out of Special K and had a new box of that which I was to open the next day.) But no, it was definitely the Corn Flakes box. I examined and tasted the flakes – yep, it was Special K in a Corn Flakes box. First time anything like that has ever happened to me.

So how weird is it that not only did they put the wrong cereal in the box, but it just so happened to be the other cereal from that company that I eat?? So now I’ve got two boxes of Special K and no Corn Flakes. Nevertheless, I’ve been putting the Special K (in the Corn Flakes box) into the rotation for both Corn Flakes and Special K. As I surmised, I’m getting a little sick of the K. Must go to the store and buy more Flakes before I’m in danger of totally upsetting my routine. Wish me luck.

So has this ever happened to anyone else? And no, Ray, I don’t want to hear the story again about the cockroaches in the cereal box. I’ve gotten the occasional CD or DVD which was not the one advertised on the outside, but never a wrong food item. Imagine if you opened up a Doritos bag and it was filled with Cheetos! Civilization would end if this type thing were prevalent.

Latre.
