I’ve suddenly noticed, especially since they’ve been redesigning one of the major intersections that I go through on the way to work each day, that many of the intersections around town are now sporting traffic surveillance cameras that point in all four directions. I don’t know if they all sprung up overnight, or they’ve been there awhile and I’m just now noticing them. I believe the authorities say the idea is to monitor the flow of traffic and adjust the stoplight cycles accordingly, but I can’t help worrying they will be used for more sinister purposes. They just look so vulture-like, perched up there on the streetlight and stoplight poles. I know some cities are using this sort of thing to catch red light runners and other traffic offenders.

I suppose the day is coming when all cars will have embedded identification chips readable by roadside sensors. Any time you exceed the speed limit or commit some other traffic infraction that can be measured – wham! you get a ticket in the mail. Even if you weren’t the one driving the car at the time. Like photoradar, but more omnipresent. Of course the accuracy of these devices and the legality of using them will be challenged through the courts, but eventually the practice will become standard.

For now, I’m going to stop picking my nose and singing along with the stereo when I’m stopped at an intersection.

Latre.

Now I’m hearing "Ricardo Montalban’s Chest" to the tune of the Embarrassment’s "Elizabeth Montgomery’s Face." I also think that "Ricardo Montalban’s Chest" would be a good band name.
