Necks

What’s the big deal about necks? Why are women considered more beautiful or glamorous when you can see all around their necks? Catherine Zeta-Jones got blasted by some fashion critics because she wore her hair down at the Oscars. Huh? Are those people daft? I hope she starts a new trend and we see lots of hair at next year’s ceremony. Va va VOOM!

I had just two questions while watching the Academy Awards this year:
1) What the heck was Sting playing and why was he rubbing it seductively? (I have since learned it was a Hurdy Gurdy.)
2) What the heck was Uma Thurman wearing? (I never did find that one out.) Was Bjork’s swan-head dress already rented out for the night?

Okay, before I degenerate into sounding too much like Joan Rivers, I guess I should comment on the awards themselves. Though the show was pretty boring, it was nice to see Return of the King make a clean sweep. I’ve been waiting for a genre movie to do that for a long time, and they sure picked a good one. I was disappointed that it didn’t get nominated for any acting Oscars (Sean Astin waz robbed!), but at least it won everything it was nominated for, even the crappy ending song. Peter Jackson – you da man – a true hero to us geeks and slobs everywhere.

Bill Murray should’ve gotten Best Actor, though since Scarlett Johansson wasn’t even nominated, I should’ve seen it coming. Sean Penn certainly did a nice job in Mystic River, and like Murray in Lost in Translation, he was playing to his own stereotyped image. I just felt Murray did it in a more subtle way. Plus I felt that LiT was a much better movie than MR (which was way too predictable), though that shouldn’t enter into determining the acting awards. The only actor in MR who surprised me was Laura Linney.

All in all, the awards were pretty predictable. I kinda knew RotK would make a good showing and get Best Picture, but I didn’t know it would do as good as it did. Perhaps there was a bit of overcompensation there. But again, I don’t care. I’m just glad to see a fantasy picture get some recognition. Maybe we’ll see more good ones now. Ha!

Latre.
