Somebody Told Me

Posted on | December 9, 2004 at 10:17 pm | 2 Comments

My friend Sue recently beat me to commenting on the Grammy nominations, and seemed to express surprise at Green Day being nominated. American Idiot is a fairly awesome album. But that nomination did catch me a bit off guard too, as did nominations for other bands whose albums I actually own and like, such as Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, and Modest Mouse. Does this mean the Grammys are finally becoming hip? Does this mean I’m finally going to watch a Grammy Awards show for the first time in my life?

Probably not.

Latre.

Reminds me of an episode of “Sports Night” where Dan is cracking on Casey over Casey’s fondness for the Starlight Vocal Band, and Casey explains that the SVB beat out Elvis Costello for top new artist at the Grammys. Casey says something along the lines of “Surely you don’t believe that Elvis Costello isn’t cool”. To which Dan replies, “No, it’s my belief that the Grammy Voters aren’t cool”.

If you do decide to watch, you can have a party, and every time someone wins an award whose music you haven’t heard wins an award, we can all do shots. We can also make book on whether we pass out by the first or second commercial break.

I was surprised at the lack of Franz Ferdinand fever in The Onion’s year-end wrap-up. I’m not sure where it’ll eventually place in my list – but all you folks recommending the Green Day album has me putting it on my list. Oh – and I heard a couple tracks from the new U2 in the record store* today.

    * A “record store” is a physical location that sells recorded music in physical form, such as (nowadays, primarily) CDs – formerly, the main format was LPs, or “records,” thus the name. They are approximately 1,200 times larger than an iPod, and hold about 100GB of musical information in a dramatically multimedia package.
