Best 15 Albums of 2004

Here are my votes in the annual LoudFans Best Albums of the Year Poll. In this poll, you vote for your top 15 albums on a point system (top album gets 5 points, bottom five get 1 point each, etc.). As I’ve said repeatedly, this has been the best year for music in a long time, and it was hard narrowing down the list to just 15 entries. This list changes pretty much on a daily basis, but here’s what it was on the day I voted in the poll…

5 points:
1) The Killers: Hot Fuss

4 points:
2) Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand
3) Ted Leo: Shake the Sheets

3 points:
4) Shalini: Metal Corner
5) Statuesque: Choir Above, Fire Below
6) Dogs Die in Hot Cars: Please Describe Yourself

2 points:
7) Starflyer 59: I Am The Portuguese Blues
8) Arcade Fire: Funeral
9) A.C. Newman: The Slow Wonder
10) The Features: Exhibit A

1 point:
11) Action Action: Don’t Cut Your Fabric To This Year’s Fashion
12) Keane: Hopes and Fears
13) Aveo: Battery
14) Green Day: American Idiot
15) Modest Mouse: Good News For People Who Like Bad News

Bubbling just under (in alphabetical order):
The Cure: The Cure
The Delays: Faded Seaside Glamour
Julianna Hatfield: In Exile Deo
L’Arc-en-Ciel: Smile
The Libertines: The Libertines
Magnetic Fields: i
Morrissey: You Are The Quarry
Bill Nelson: Satellite Songs
Poster Children: On The Offensive EP
John Sharples: I Can Explain Everything
Elliott Smith: From A Basement On The Hill
Stranglers: Norfolk Coast
Tears for Fears: Everybody Loves A Happy Ending
The Thrills: Let’s Bottle Bohemia

Every single one of these are CDs I bought, rather than downloaded from eMusic or iTunes. I did a lot of CD buying this year.

Really good album I’ve downloaded from eMusic but listened to too late to include in the voting:
Get-Up Kids: Guilt Show

I actually made a compilation CD this year of some of the year’s best music and gave it to some friends. Here are my thoughts on the songs I put on it and why. It should give you some idea of what my favorite songs were, though I didn’t necessarily always put my favorite song from a particular album on the mix. Again, all the songs were from CDs I bought rather than downloaded.

Latre.

Dagnabit! I thought I was doing pretty well at hearing most of the cool stuff this year, but you have *16* CDs listed here I haven’t heard yet. On the other hand, I own 9 of the first 10 you list, which is either good, bad, or scary, depending. My list is going up any day now…

I’m saving a copy of the comp CD for you, Alan, so you can check out some of the other stuff. Obviously I haven’t had a chance to give it to you yet. Look forward to seeing your list.
