The Price of Indulgence

Snyder's of Hanover Jalapeño Pretzel Pieces One of my favorite snackin’ foods is Snyder’s of Hanover Jalapeño Pretzel Pieces. I like most types of pretzels. I’m something of a salt addict. But I also like spicy foods, so this combines a few of my favorite tastes. However, I gave them up awhile ago because they’re about 1/3 fat, and also contain monosodium glutamate (MSG). I thought they had some trans fats also, but either they took those out or they never actually had them and I imagined seeing “partially hydrogenated” on the ingredients list.

I didn’t notice the MSG initially until I began to wonder why I almost always got a headache on the same day I ate them (even when I wasn’t hungover!). MSG used to be pretty popular in Chinese food as a flavor enhancer, until people began to realize it causes headaches. I’m sure there’s other health issues with MSG as well. My stomach never feels quite right after eating it. I think adding MSG to anything is cheating, and I wonder if I would like these as much if they didn’t have it.

Anyway, these were on sale for like half price at Safeway last weekend. Since it’s my birthday week and I’m home on vacation, I decided to pick up a package and indulge myself like the old days. The first couple of days went pretty well and I didn’t get any headaches. However, I ate a bunch this morning and was definitely feeling the old bad feeling in the noggin. Ah well, I guess my decision to quit was a good one. Why are things that are so good usually so bad for you?

Latre.
