Venture Brothers – Not Even Nominated

I violated my no non-Oscar non-MTV award show rule on Sunday by watching the Emmy Awards. Since I didn’t watch the MTV Video Music Awards this year, I figure it’s a wash. And I didn’t really watch it so much as record it and then fast-forward through the commercials, acceptance speechs, pleas, and tributes (aside from the Johnny Carson tribute). That way I only wasted an hour or so. Thankfully, I missed most of the opening Earth Wind & Fire/Blackeyed Peas musical number, which looked horrid from what little I saw/heard of it.

Besides having a thing against award shows in general, I especially loathe the Emmys and the Grammys because in my mind, they do not usually reflect what is really good, either in the nominations or the winners. I had some interest in the Emmys this year because of all the nominations for Lost, and for other interesting ones like Ian McShane’s Deadwood nomination and the one for The Office. And though I was happy for the wins for Lost and The Daily Show, there wasn’t much in the way of winners that invalidated my views. Nor was there much in the way of any other reasons to watch. There seemed to especially be a lack of humor. The pre-scripted “humorous” small talk that the co-presenters made to each other fell flat, and often seemed to leave the audience wondering if they were supposed to laugh or not. Some MTV award show writers were definitely needed to punch things up there. Host Ellen DeGeneres didn’t seem to have much to do.

I did like Jon Stewart’s pre-censored rant, predictable though the piece was. I was horrified by Donald Trump’s singing of the Green Acres theme (Hi, William Shatner), and it’s going to take lots of alcohol to block that memory. I understand the need to shuffle the “creative awards” off the show, but couldn’t they at least have announced the winners? I was curious about whether Project Greenlight won for Best Non-Competition Reality Show (or whatever that award is called), but had to go to the website to find out that Extreme Makeover – Home Edition won. And is Will & Grace even still on the air? It sure seemed to get a lot of nominations, though I don’t think it won much this time.

Bah. Latre.
