Another Distraction

So… this video iPod thing. I don’t get it. Does anyone really want to watch TV shows on a 2.5″ handheld screen? I suppose it might be cool if you ride the bus to work every day and want to catch last night’s Daily Show, but I really don’t see that function being used by most people. Seems like it would cause some awful eyestrain, and would be hard to make out important details. Heck, my Sony PSP plays videos (on a bigger screen) and I’ve never actually used it for that. Though I do have a couple of anime movies/shows on the memory stick. Mostly I use the PSP to play games. And I use my iPod to listen to music. Television is something I enjoy watching at home, on my big TV. Are we so addicted to TV that we have to bring it with us everywhere? Aren’t cell phones bad enough?

Plus, the whole thing could be kind of creepy. You never know what video someone is going to put on there. And watch on the bus. Or show to other people on the bus. Where you can’t escape. And I’m not just talking porn. Imagine being cornered while someone shows you a home video of little Justin playing with the dog. Shudder. Or what about that co-worker (the same one who is always downloading funny commercials from the internet) who insists you watch that really funny scene from last night’s Desperate Housewives?

Hey, does anyone know where I can buy annatto seed in the Denver area? I can’t find it at the supermarket or Wild Oats.

Latre.

Although I don’t follow the iPod thing, not being a music guy myself, I do follow gadgetry in general and have heard about the video iPod finally arriving. Of all the criticisms I’ve heard of it, the concept of watching video on a small screen isn’t one of them – no fast forward or rewind, no DivX support, stuff like that is more common. Not everyone is addicted to large screens!
On Engadget.com I saw one Asian video player with a

If Wild Oats doesn’t have it, you can check Whole Foods, but I wouldn’t hold much hope. Might have to use the power of the Internets. You’ll use up a 1 lb bag eventually, and even if you could find it locally, a smaller quantity is probably 3-4 dollars anyway. What kind of party are you planning, anyway? And how come I’m not invited? Planning on making some videos to show on the bus?

Do you have any Latino markets nearby? That would probably be the easiest place to find annatto seed. You can also order it from Penzeys.

“Are we so addicted to TV that we have to bring it with us everywhere?” My pet peeve in that area are places that actually mount little TVs above the goddamned urinals (almost invariably with sports playing on them). It’s like, oh, I can’t possibly miss a second of my overgrown heroes’ huffing and puffing. Sheesh.

Editrix, I’m sure there must be some, as Denver has a huge hispanic population, but I’m having trouble formulating a search for such.

2fs, it’s even worse when they show softcore porn videos above the urinals.
