Nose-Cutting, Face-Spiting

I don’t often wade into political/religious waters, but this is very important to me…

I was happy to read this week that a Vatican official refuted “Intelligent Design” (take that, Kansas). As an ex-Catholic, I don’t have much truck with the church these days, nor do I care much about what they think. But I still have to praise at least this one official for speaking out and doing the right thing. You can always count on the Jesuits (such as my buddy Glenn) to apply logic and thoughtfulness to a debate.

There was also a thoughtful article in the paper this morning on the religion vs. science debate that I thought summed things up really well. To wit:

  • “Intelligent Design” is not science and should not be taught as science.
  • Though they occasionally make statements to the contrary, the backers of “Intelligent Design” have an agenda far beyond merely getting across acknowledgement of a creator’s role in the formation of life.
  • Believing in the Theory of Evolution is not incompatible with religious beliefs. You can still believe in both God and science (as do many scientists). The hand of God can take many forms.

Latre.

One thing you don’t mention (although the link does) is that the “Vatican Official” was their Chief Astronomer. I don’t know how much clout he has with the nut jobs in Vatican City or if he is allowed to speak for the church (or even if he was speaking for the church when he said that).

He’s probably being held in a dungeon somewhere in the bowels of the city by now. Rest easy – they don’t torture their detainees and neither do we!

They’ll probably claim he was some asylum escapee or something masquerading as a Vatican spokesperson…
