Missed It By That Much

Posted on | May 14, 2006 at 10:11 pm | 11 Comments

Okay, I admit it. I occasionally play PowerBall. I like giving my money away to the government with no hope of return. Really, the only reason I do it is so that I can daydream for a couple of hours about what I would do with the money. I can’t daydream if I don’t actually buy a ticket.

The losing ticket
Well, check out this latest non-winning QuickPick ticket of mine for last Saturday’s drawing. (The 30’s are circled because those were the only numbers that matched the drawn numbers.) What I didn’t realize, until I checked the ticket for winning numbers, was that two of the quick picks were so close to each other. Check it out: Two picks on the same ticket, one right after the other, with four matching numbers as each other. And the non-matching numbers, as well as the PowerBall numbers, were separated only by two (45/43, 04/06).

Unfortunately, this gives me hope that it is actually possible to win, and will probably just feed my gambling addiction, in spite of the fact that matching four numbers would only have grossed me $100 anyway. Oh well. I hope the money I spend on the tickets goes to good causes.

Latre.

Hey, who needs lottery tickets – that Million Blogger stuff looks like a goldmine! Without all that gold cluttering up the place.

Wait a second. In order to daydream about winning the lottery, one has to actually buy a ticket? Damnation.

Spam is getting pretty uppity these days.

Too bad the time isn’t down to the second, so we can really compare. And I still don’t know what the “e” is for. I don’t think it’s Eastern time zone though.

Yikes, I forgot to adjust for DST. Times should be more correct now.

Well, as for the “what are the chances” comment re: timestamp, I started to break down the numbers – begin with the overall number of blog entries to date and a rough guess at the average number of comments per post, then divide by the number of minutes in a day, and finally add in a skew factor to address issues like comments coming more often in the day than late at night, etc.

The result is not surprising, in retrospect: I have a bit too much free time.
