Journey To Banal

Posted on | February 11, 2007 at 8:15 pm | 7 Comments

Week after week after week, according to StatCounter, the most popular search that leads to my blog is for the phrase that forms the title of this very old entry. For some reason, that entry is listed as the #3 link when searching for that title on Google (at the time of this writing). It just blows my mind that the poor little Journey fans come to this site searching for info on their favorite song, and end up seeing my anti-Journey vitriol. Life is harsh.

Actually, I don’t hate Journey. But I do think they’re the very definition of mediocrity. I can’t even find three songs from them to fulfill my Three Songs Rule. (That rule states that even if I don’t like a popular classic rock band, I must admit they have three, and only three, good songs. For example, Steve Miller has Serenade, Jungle Love, and Space Cowboy.) Bob Seger is another popular old artist who does not conform to my rule. But whereas Bob Seger is Pure Evil, Journey is just Banal. Which, by some definitions, is even more Evil. But there you go.

Okay, I do kind of appreciate Separate Ways (Worlds Apart). And Jonathan Cain’s a decent keyboard player. But Steve Perry’s voice? Ick. Ick Ick Ick.

Have at me, Journey fans. I’m ready for ya.

Latre.

Dude, what about “Jet Airliner,” “Rock’n Me,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Fly Like An Eagle,” and “Swingtown”? Are you not a red-blooded American teen?

Aaargh! My ears! My ears! (Or, really, “My brain!” as it remembers those tunes.)

    Even when I was a red-blooded American teen, I hated those songs…

    But I suspect you’re playing Devil’s Advocate here, Paula…

I don’t hate Journey so much as what they represent to me, over-hyped, over-produced, schamltzy, top 40 “Album Rock” from the 70s. They do meet the three song rule for me (Or the songs do if not the performances), Don’t Stop Believin’ is actually a catchy little number when performed by someone other than Steve Perry.

I could maybe get behind DSB a little better if it wasn’t used ad nauseum in every political campaign ever.

No, I take that back. Nothing can make me appreciate that song.

No, I actually do love those songs…except maybe “Fly Like and Eagle.”

    Bob Seger?

    Get Out Of Denver
    Katmandu
    Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man

and that’s just off one album. Next you’ll be telling us you don’t like the Drive-By Truckers…

For the record: INXS is the worst band ever.

Okay, “Denver” and “Man” are only Mildly Evil, but “Katmandu” is 9th Circle of Hell Evil. Thank God you didn’t mention “Turn The Page”. Or my personal pick for worst, “Hollywood Nights”.

    Never heard the DBTs.

INXS is somewhat tolerable at times, but I wouldn’t buy any of their albums.
