The Rubdown, Part 2: Massagus Interruptus

Look at all dem bones and musclesAnyone ever gotten a cramp during a massage? I regularly get a cramp in the arch of my foot (sometimes the left foot, sometimes the right) in the middle of the massage. It usually happens when some other part of my body is being worked on. I also get these same cramps at home when I’m not doing anything, like sitting in the recliner watching TV and not moving any part of my body. Or when I’m in bed at night asleep (although they most often happen right as I’m falling asleep).

I used to get leg cramps in my calves fairly frequently, but mostly when I was stretching or doing some other motion that would stimulate the muscle. So I stopped doing those motions. But these foot cramps are different, as they seem to occur more when I’m totally relaxed and not doing anything. What’s up with that? I also wonder if it’s maybe a temperature related thing, like it happens when my feet are too cold.

My last two massages have been miraculously cramp free. I was really surprised that the one from Friday was that way, since I suffered through a few of the cramps the night before. Maybe I was cramped-out.

So does this sort of thing ever happen to anyone else? And if so, is there anything you do about it? These cramps are some of the less painful ones I’ve had, and they go away quickly if I just stand on the affected foot. But boy are they annoying, and they can occur at inopportune times. I hate having to jump out of bed in the middle of the night because my foot has locked up, especially if it was in the middle of a nice dream. Or to jump up off the massage table in the middle of the session. That’s just not right.

Latre.

Which reminds me: music not to play during massages would include The Cramps.

I used to have terrible problems with cramps in my calves, mostly triggered by cold, but sometimes spontaneously, and I found that Calcium supplements really helped.
