A Modest Proposal

The Chinese are fighting Internet addiction among the young the only way they know how: Boot Camp!

This is marvelous idea which I think should be extended to teens in this country. And why stop at Internet addiction? This could also be used to cure other teenage ailments, like Excessive Piercing And Tattooing, Wearing Baggy Clothes, Thinking I’m King Of The Mall / Theater / Fast Food Restaurant And That No Other Patrons Exist, Video Game / Cell Phone / Text Messaging Addiction, Lawn Trespassing, Thinking It’s Okay To Smoke Because It Looks So Cool And Lung Cancer Will Probably Be Cured In My Lifetime Anyway, and Owning The Sidewalk With My Skateboard Or The Road With My Noisy Motorized Scooter.

I’d like to see some young punk/punkess trying to text message with his/her Sidekick when his/her arms are too sore after all those 6am pushups! Of course, their khaki fatigues will have to be of the non-baggy variety.

Yes, I’m a Crotchety Old Man.

Latre.

There’s an interesting article in the latest (I think) _Harper’s_ about this very phenomenon. Also, as the teens in your last paragraph: they are guilty of Being American.

Why stop with the teens? Those twenty-somethings are really getting all up in my craw or something. I remember when most movies and sitcoms used to be about people my own age, but more and more of them have these KIDS who should still be in school… It angries up the blood!

(Schedule me for a rant about folks in their 30s in 3 more years)
