Worm Getter or Vampire?

Posted on | May 20, 2007 at 4:58 pm | 12 Comments

I can’t decide if I’m a morning person or a night person.

Evidence for morning person:
I can’t stay in bed too long. Things start to ache. Limbs get numb and then fall off. If I sleep more than 6-7 hours, then the last few hours are very restless and I drift in and out of sleep. I keep thinking of all the things I should be getting up to do. When the alarm goes off, I’m instantly awake and can spring out of bed almost immediately. See this exciting old entry for more on my sleep habits.

Evidence for night person:
I can never turn in early. There’s always something more to do before going to bed. I’m strangely energized late at night, even if my eyelids won’t stay open and my restless legs go a-shakin’.

Other possible deciding factors:
At work, I’m not sure if I’m more awake and get more done in the morning or in the afternoon. I definitely have an energy/productivity spurt in late morning and early afternoon.

I get extremely tired mid-morning, post-lunch, and pre-dinner. Could really use a 15 minute nap to refresh myself, and I often take one before dinner. Sometimes my eyelids are in actually physical pain from the tiredness and all they want to do is close. I notice this has gotten worse since I was on antidepressants last summer (which made me very tired), though I’m sure there’s none of that lingering in my system these days.

Maybe since I’m so tired all the time, I’m neither a morning or night person. I’m an “I’ll be awake when I’m awake person”. Or maybe I’m not ever really fully awake…

Latre.

I am definitely a morning person, but my wife and kid are not. It makes for some trouble on vacations.

Yikes, I don’t know how you do it!

You’re either drinking too much, or not enough – it can be hard to tell which.

Or maybe it’s your diet. Try eating more vitamin B6, and cut out melamine.

Rog, why don’t you rearrange your work and social life so you can sleep from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm? Problem solved.

What, and sleep when it’s light out?? I can’t do that!

So sleep in the closet. Do I need to figure out everything for you? I have my own sleep issues to worsen by obsessing over them.

Take it from the voice of experience here – Roger’s not big on taking well-intended suggestions delivered via blog comments, for some reason…

Shut your pie-hole, Ben, or I’ll shut it for ya!

    (Errr… Shut your typing finger?)

Maybe you have the capability to be either. When I worked evenings I was a night person, now that I am working days I am a morning person. It is possible to simply adjust to your situation. I’m enjoying the morning person thing a lot right now, I like sunrise and being out early when it’s just me and the milkman on the road. But it sucks that whenever I get out of a movie theater it is always light out.

The only solution? To fulfill mankind’s longtime dream of blotting out the sun!

Just one more quick comment: About the ‘early bird gets the worm’ thing, getting the worm seems like really poor incentive.

Depends on if it’s a gummy worm or not…
