The Language Of Loss

My hit count really goes down when I talk about music (or movies, or television…), but I don’t care. Suck it, plebes. Lately I’ve been really getting into the Texas band Voxtrot. Really, really getting into them. They’ve got three EPs and a full length album out, and all of it is pretty, pretty good (as Larry David would say). I’ve heard that people who were really into the EPs were disappointed in the full length (self-titled) album, but I really like it after only one listen. I don’t know how to classify them, except as good ol’ indie pop rock. Sometimes they sound a bit like Morrissey/The Smiths (especially on the Raised By Wolves EP, my least favorite of their releases), but they obviously have a lot of influences. It’s all catchy as hell.

And since right now my favorite song of theirs, “Sway” (from the Your Biggest Fan EP), is also their slowest one, you know that there must be something there. ‘Cuz I really don’t like the slow songs unless they have a really outstanding melody. And sappy strings, of course.

All of their releases are available on eMusic, so I’ve only listened to them as digital downloads. The music is so good it makes me want to buy the CDs. That’s rare these days. It’s so good it makes me cry. Cry, I tell you! I’m crying! Life is good.

Of course, I’ll probably be totally over them and on to someone new by next week.

Thanks to the villain for originally recommending Voxtrot to me.

And yes, I know I have yet to publicly comment on the new New Pornographers album Challengers. I’m still trying to fully absorb it. You know how I feel about mid-tempo. (Speaking of the NP’s, has anyone else noticed that the TV commercial for the new Greg Kinnear/Morgan Freeman movie Feast of Love features “The Bleeding Heart Show” from Twin Cinema playing throughout it? Yowzer!)

Pet Peeve Of The Day: Why is Matthew McConaughey more famous than I am?

I don’t think they had any studio recordings out back then…

Respect is little bird tweeting in tree. If you go through life chasing it, all you end up with in the end is poop on your head.

That New Pornographers is getting a lot of press. I haven’t figured out if it is a hipster feeding frenzy or record company hype.

It ain’t hype – I’ve loved them since their first album Mass Romantic. The new one is probably my least favorite of their four, so of course it will get the most press. Feeding Frenzy? True hipsters will probably say they’ve already peaked.

I still maintain that “Sing Me Spanish Techno” (from Twin Cinema) is the song we should be transmitting to aliens to show them what humans are capable of. Which reminds me that someday I need to go back and revisit my post guessing at the lyrics of that song, since now I have a better idea of the true lyrics. I was pretty close though. (”The hourglass spills its sand”, not fills. D’oh.)
