My Pathology Of Blogging

Posted on | September 30, 2007 at 9:58 am | 3 Comments

Well, after a long summer dry spell, I’ve managed to actually blog every day for a month now. That’s a feat nearly unmatched by me. I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep it up and beat my record from last Feb/March, but who knows. It’s incredibly difficult keeping up this pace. Luckily I had a lot of topics built up from that fallow time, so I didn’t have to think much about what to write. But I’m running out of those, and I have less time for blogging now that the new television season has started in earnest. (It also helps that there have been no family emergencies lately, but I don’t expect that to last much longer.) This kind of blogging takes up anywhere from a half hour to 1.5 hours per day, depending on the length of the post and if I take pictures or do research or any of that. It’s taking time away from television and reading, and we can’t have that! And oh yeah, I don’t want to take time away from N either. There are some blogging “tricks” I use. Sometimes, I’ll compose two entries in a day (this one was actually mostly written on Saturday morning the 29th, right after Saturday’s entry) and sometimes I’ll split an especially long post into two. But mostly I don’t write too far in advance – I like the immediacy of blogging.

So why do it every day? Well, I find that what works best for me is if I get into a routine. If I skip one day, then I’m like “oh well, my streak is ruined”, and it’s much easier for me to skip the next day. And the next. That’s just the way I’m wired. Once I get out of the habit of something, it’s hard for me to get back into it. Example One: This summer.

So, again, why do it every day? Why not every other day or every third day, or some other regular schedule? That’s a definite possibility, and I can see myself doing that as demands on my time during the fall grows. But I think I’m at my best when I write something every day, even if it’s a throwaway post. I gotta stay in practice. Keep me in, Coach!

It will be interesting to see how things progress from here. Please stay with me on this journey, won’t you, and let me know how I’m doing!

Pet Peeve Of The Day: The phrase “It will be interesting to see…” or “It should be interesting to see…”. It’s a lazy way to end a conversation and yet I do it a lot! It’s one of those “Okay, I’m done talking about this now” signals that everyone just accepts.

Latre.

“That’s just the way I’m wired.”

I, and the rest of the sentient universe, thank you for not writing “that’s just the way I roll.”

Daily blogging is really what separates the serious writers from the lamers like me.

My short throw away posts always end up being long and involved. It takes 1.5 to 3 hours to write, edit, enhance, and post an entry. I try to keep them a minimum of one and a half days apart so that people that read once a day get a shot at each one.

I also use the split into two posts and write ahead tricks.

I wouldn’t say that. I think non-daily bloggers like yourself are probably more interesting to read, since more time & thought is put into individual posts. Plus, it’s really hard for me to keep up with all my blog reading anyway, especially the people who blog every day. So it’s a mystery why I myself do something that I prefer others not do…

But yeah, it’s amazing how much time this stuff takes up, isn’t it?
