When Is A Law Not A Law?

It occurs to me I didn’t say anything about the elections this week. There’s not much to say. My local city had a contentious mayor’s race for once. We barely escaped having a teenage mayor. Okay, so she isn’t actually a teenager, but she’s damn close (26). She was basically running on a platform of Let’s bring down The Man! and had some support for that. She was emboldened by having lead and won a campaign against a developer/city land swap deal last year. She wanted to get rid of the city manager, who has been involved in some imbroglios (mostly involving his salary and perks), but who also has done a lot of good for the city. The voters elected to go with the candidate who wanted to keep the city on its present path, and I agreed. Rita just seemed a bit too naive and inexperienced to me. I’ve been pretty happy with the direction the city is going lately; Belmar is especially nice.

LeafThe city of Denver passed another pro-marijuana initiative, making it the lowest priority for law enforcement. I see this as a good thing, but it’s not really going to matter much. It was already a low priority crime. And the initiative came on the heels of the last one from 2005, which legalized possession of small amounts of the drug in the city, and couldn’t really be enforced because possession is still illegal by state and federal laws. A statewide legalization initiative failed in 2006, but passed in Denver. If only the rest of the state would get on board. So the passage of this initiative was mostly another symbolic gesture. If this trend continues, the next ballot initiative will be to declare that “Weed is really righteous and it makes me feel good & mellow, man. So get off my back, Mom. It’s not like I’m out burglarizing the neighbors for heroin money.”

Jogged Today: No, still not feeling well.
Today’s Weight: 163 lbs
Lunch Yesterday: McDonald’s Classic Chicken Sandwich (crispy) and a few fries. (Yes, I know.)
Pet Peeve of the Day: Breakfast should be served all day long at every restaurant, especially on the weekends. Not everyone gets up by 10:30, y’know.

Just a suggestion for your blog, if you run out of topics — I would like to hear your opinion of the recent changes at Funky Winkerbean. I was disturbed that the one-armed girl is now married to the comic book guy. Talk amongst yourselves.
