Dark Holiday Mood

According to several articles like this one, Americans are in a dark holiday mood this year. Fellow Americans, what’s wrong with you? I don’t know about Americans in general, but I know my mood is pretty grim. Going to two funerals of two good friends within one month will do that to you. I don’t feel very thankful at this point. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to gorging myself on food today.

Other ways I plan to enjoy the holiday, compared to previous years:

  • Will not get drunk, stub toe on furniture, and make awkward pass at sister-in-law.
  • Will not let 5-year old niece beat me at Sequence.
  • Will not wear my Kabaddi shorts to family celebration. It’s too cold anyway.
  • Will say something when I notice Great Aunt Hortense checking out my package.
  • Will answer my sister’s usual “Dad always liked you best” rant with “You bet! I’m sane!”.
  • Will not wear a belt.
  • Will avoid disapproving head shakes from family by not reciting my Guinea Pigs were originally developed as a food source and taste better than turkey speech.
  • Will talk about how my plasma TV is so much clearer and bigger than my brother-in-law’s.
  • Will avoid eating yams and other things that come from dirt.
  • Will look as dorky as possible when playing Wii games, despite admonishments from the gf.
  • Will root for the Jets and the Falcons. I love underdogs. Or will not watch football at all.
  • Will not mud wrestle in the backyard with the dogs for the last turkey leg.
  • Will not sit alone outside in the garden waiting for the “Great Pumpkin Pie”.

Happy Thanksgiving! How is everyone else enjoying the holiday?

Note: I do not actually have a sister-in-law or great aunt.

Jogged Today: No, it’s 21°F and I’m too tired.
Today’s Weight: 163 lbs
Lunch Yesterday: Most of an Italian Combo at Panera Bread and some broccoli cheddar soup.
Pet Peeve of the Day: Suspense. Check back tomorrow.

Latre.

I love your list, whether the entries are fictional or not. I’m spending the day here in Music City with my lovely g/f, first at an afternoon gathering of her family – where I’m to meet her mom for the first time – then just the two of us sharing a cozy evening . I am *so* glad that I didn’t spend last night doing what I’ve done on Thanksgiving Eve on many years – driving back to WV, or at least as far as Knoxville, through torrential rain and darkness. Your mention of Panera Bread in turn prompts me to mention that Ladies Love Panera Bread. OK, my particular lady doesn’t, but women at my workplace, fer instance, are ridonkulously crazed for Panera Bread, in the same way that they all seem to think that Pretty Woman is a great movie. Personally I think Panera Bread is ok, but I don’t get going all ga-ga-ga-ga-ga-ga over it. Hope you and Ms N have a wonderful day!!!

Apparently Australia is not grateful for anything, because they don’t have Thanksgiving here and they’re not normally the types to pass up a chance to drink and eat meat.

Of course, the wife is gonna try to find turkey or something to barbecue up this weekend anyway – but in more practical terms, the main thing we miss out on here is Black Friday sales…
