Gonna Fly Now

I filled another one of the gaps in my lifal education last weekend – I finally saw the original Rocky. N was surprised I’d never seen it – it’s one of her favorites. But, y’know, she’s never seen Star Wars. Anyway, I had recorded it off of HDNet Movies awhile ago and finally got around to watching it. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but more for the character scenes and the depiction of life in a Philadelphia neighborhood in the 70s than for the fight. Thankfully, the fighting didn’t take much screen time. And I had a little trouble figuring out the ending, since the music was so loud it obscured what everyone was saying. Or maybe that’s just because the continued deterioration of my Old Man hearing. Luckily I already kinda knew about the ending, since it’s hard to avoid that kind of spoiler for 30 years.

Sly was actually a pretty decent actor back in the day, though maybe he wasn’t really acting. Did you know this movie won some Oscars in 1977? It’s true: Best Picture and Best Director. And Best Film Editing. It might’ve won more, but it looks like Network kinda swept things that year. I thought it had won for the screenplay too, but that was just a nomination.

I’ve never seen any of the sequels either, and I’m not sure I want to. Might ruin the original experience for me.

Next up: Reading War & Peace and Moby Dick.

Well, after 5-some months of daily blog posts, I think I need a rest. The daily grind is really getting to me. I’ve been snapping at the dog, even though I don’t have a dog. I’m putting vodka on my Corn Flakes. I take notes while shopping at Safeway in case something interesting happens. I take pictures of anything and everything, no matter how dull. So, I’m going to take a week or so off and get my mind together and try to get some other things done. No, I’m not going on vacation. Although I’ll probably just use the extra time to do more videogaming. Steve, you win the post-every-day-since October-30th competition! All you have to do is post something today and tomorrow…

Wow, you really had me going there for a minute, Rogj! I totally bought the whole “never saw Rocky before but Stallone sure was a good actor” thing, but the utter absurdity of being tired of putting vodka on cornflakes made me think twice, at which point I realized – it’s still April Fool’s Day in your neck o’ the woods!

Well, Sly was nominated for Best Actor for the movie, so a few someones agreed with me that he was good in the pic.

And really, it’s no prank… that was my first time seeing the movie.

Speaking of taking a week or so off, the wife and I just got back from a 4-day break (the half of spring break that the kid is with the ex). Originally we’d figured on Vegas, but the drive’s a bit long so we decided to go to the much closer Indian casinos.

We wound up staying at the somewhat-unusual Desert Shadows Inn, conveniently located less than 2 miles from a casino. Not to mention a bit cheaper than casino hotels, which were mostly sold out for spring break anyway. We even got to walk across the slightly-famous pedestrian bridge they have. It’s actually quite a nice resort. The restaurant had recently been completely redone; we had lunch a couple times there and both thought the food was excellent (it’s rare for us both to like the same restaurant).

We went to three different casinos, so we could experience losing money in slot machines with more variety.

Alas, spring break is over now… so it’s back to the usual routine.

Sorry you got caught in the moderation queue, Phil. Double whammy: more than one hyperlink, and the word “casino”.

I think you’re April Fooling me and you didn’t actually stay there at the Desert Shadows (”the ultimate stress-free vacation in a beautiful clothes-free setting”). If you really did, I want pictures! Hmmm, on second thought, maybe I don’t…

Taking pictures at the resort is strictly forbidden. However, rule-bender that I am, I didn’t think I’d get in too much trouble taking pictures of the novel signage or localized shots with no people in them. I’ve never used flickr before, so I’m not sure I’ve got it set up right. Photos here.

(”the ultimate stress-free vacation in a beautiful clothes-free setting”)

By the way, the resort is nothing like the impression you might get from the website (which I think was done by a previous owner). We read a lot of customer reviews on other websites before we booked.

First off, it’s not “clothes-free”, it’s “clothing optional”. The resort guests are free to wear as much or as little clothing as they wish. The only exception is in the pools/jacuzzi’s where swimsuits are not allowed. And the resort staff is always fully dressed. Plus, even if you’re not wearing clothes that doesn’t mean you don’t have a towel around you.

Personally, I think it made a lot of sense. At a regular hotel, you lounge in the sun until you get too hot, then take a dip in the pool to cool off. You can try to dry off, but when you return to lounging you’ll be sitting there in a cold, heavy, soggy swimsuit that’s dripping all over the place. At this place, after you dip in the pool you wrap your towel around you, and you’re pretty much dry. No swimsuit dripping all over or making you cold. And you don’t have to pack a wet swimsuit when you leave. Nice.
