World of Ghosts

My friend Bradley Skaught, musician/songwriter extraordinaire, late of Belle Da Gama, has released some new stray songs on his website. The first two songs, World of Ghosts and Ballad of Matt Herges, make it sound like the spirit of the late, great Elliott Smith has taken up residence in Bradley’s body. I hope he does not take offense at this, as I mean it in a good way. It’s uncanny how much he sounds like Smith on these recordings, and I wonder if it’s intentional. Stephen Manning appears on the third song, Little Sister Cities, which is a treat for Statuesque fans. Good stuff! I hope that Bradley will be able to come out with an album soon. It’s been a long time since Belle Da Gama’s Garden Abstract and I need my fix.

Latre.

Wow – I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that. I hadn’t thought Bradley’s voice resembled Smith’s before…but on these songs, it really does. What’s interesting is to go back and hear that the Smith influence was there before – just maybe a little less obvious somehow. And I don’t think Bradley will be offended – I know he included a couple of Elliott Smith tunes on a mix CD he sent me a few months back.

Hmmm, I hadn’t thought about Bradley’s older stuff sounding like Smith. I’ll have to go back and listen with that in mind. The new song he posted today, Underground, doesn’t sound as much to me like Smith as the other two, but there are still similarities there.
