Brief Sibling Movie Reviews

Posted on | December 7, 2005 at 2:45 pm | 2 Comments

I don’t normally do this sort of thing, but this cracked me up. Here’s an e-mail excerpt from my older sister Jo, talking about airplane movies on her & her husband Jerry’s recent anniversary trip to Hawaii (”Charlie” refers to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory):

I thought Charlie was very dark and loud. Yuk! Then after that they showed “The Island” which was nothing about an island, and was worse. Then on the way home it was Charlie again.

Take that, Tim Burton and Michael Bay!

I actually liked Charlie, but I haven’t seen The Island

Latre.

They had “The Island” on our flight last weekend, and since it was on opposite “Sky High”, “Will and Grace” and two (count ‘em – TWO) showings of “Dukes of Hazzard”, and we had limited reading material with little chance of sleeping during the 16 hour flight, we watched… it was indeed Michael Bay at his jaw-droppingly crappiest.

If “The Island” is showing on your flight, FAA regulations should allow you to open the emergency exit and step outside until it’s over. Preferably before the scene where they’re hanging off the side of the building, being machine-gunned from 3 angles, and they survive by falling 70 stories and landing on a big muddled special effect of some kind that you can’t really see what it is ‘cos the cameras are busy doing that handheld/shaking thing that was so avant-garde about 12 years ago.

“Sky High” at least had a couple really good people (Bruce Campbell, Dave Foley, and some surprise cameos) plus more than one chuckle-out-loud gag. More importantly, it burned enough time so that I had stuff to read during the Dukes movie(s)…

Don’t they have to edit those for showing on airplanes? Maybe the original theaterical cut of The Island is sensational!
