Hooray For The WGA Strike

Posted on | November 12, 2007 at 6:11 pm | 2 Comments

Day 12 of National Blog Posting Month (Day 14 of consecutive daily posts) and I’m hurting. Even though I’ve got the day off for Veteran’s Day, there’s a lot to do and I’m starting to fall behind and run out of topics. Plus the next several days are going to be really hectic.

Lots to WatchHey, how about this Writer’s Guild of America strike? Looks like it’s going to shutdown TV production pretty quickly if it’s not resolved soon. Many shows are already hurting and will be running out of new episodes shortly. I say Hooray! Maybe it will give me the time I need to catch up on the backlogged shows on my DVR. Of which there are many. Many, many, many shows. It’s a juggling act trying to watch enough old stuff before new stuff records and erases it. And since the HD shows take up a lot more space than the Standard Definition shows, it doesn’t do me any good to watch the SD shows. So those are really piling up. I had to go through this morning and delete some HD movies that I recorded from HBO and Showtime.

Even though I really miss The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, that just gives me an extra hour four mornings a week to watch something old. It means I’ll miss being caught up on national news (albeit national news filtered through satire), but at least I’ll reduce that backlog. And hey, if things drag on long enough, maybe I can actually start advancing my NetFlix queue again.

But I’m not only thinking of myself. I think the Hollywood writers have a legitimate beef here. They do deserve a cut of the online etc profits that the stuff they write generates. Hopefully the studios will wise up and give it to them. Just not too soon.

Jogged Today: No. Still under the weather (I’m beginning to suspect allergies rather than a cold), plus I slept in for the holiday.
Today’s Weight: 162.2 lbs
Lunch Yesterday: None, late breakfast again.
Pet Peeve of the Day: Going back to work on the Tuesday after a Monday holiday, especially when you’ve forgotten what you were doing on the Friday before the 3-day weekend.

Latre.

I haven’t found any info on the strike issues that isn’t slanted to the point of propaganda, but we have lots of friends in the guild and don’t know any producers so if I felt like choosing sides it wouldn’t be a tough decision.
I’m told the big rallies can be a lot of fun, not to mention good schmoozing opportunities. That said, my sources really aren’t the sorts to take such issues seriously – at least not yet – and it’s still early days for everyone.
Unfortunately I suspect both sides are gonna be unpleasantly surprised by how long this will drag on. The entertainment market is too big and diverse now for either side to really apply a damaging amount of leverage to its opponent without slitting its own throat. I’m sure both realize that already, and this is just a political (psychological) struggle rather than something genuinely fueled by contractual disagreements.

Your post about television inspired me to write a post about television. I ‘ve been managing a few posts a week, if I were to try to maintain daily posting I would have to resort to politics a lot more often than I do.
