SynCainicity

Time to take a short break from talking about iPhone apps while I do some more research and testing. On to another subject. Every once in a while, I have to do Josh’s job and point out something in a comic strip that he and the Curmudgeon Commenters might have missed. I especially enjoy seeing two (or more) strips that use something close to the same gag on the same day, apparently unplanned. In yesterday’s Rocky Mountain News, it was especially jarring because the two strips are right next to each other. Both strips, Candorville and Doonesbury, are often politically focused, so it’s no surprise they latched onto the same “John McCain is sure using his awful Vietnam experience to sell his campaign” issue on the same day (click graphic to enlarge):

Same Joke (click to enlarge)

Bonus points to Candorville for getting in a Palin-slam, and hugs & kisses to Doonesbury for working in the “I don’t remember how many houses I have” McCain Senior Moment. Coincidentally, the same day also saw the release of a film showing McCain’s release from the Vietnamese prison. And yesterday was also the anniversary of 9/11. The cynical part of me thinks this was engineered on purpose to help McCain with his campaign. But a politician and his handlers wouldn’t do something like that, would they?

Latre.

Once, back in the 1920s, Americans were entertained by an Oklahoma cowboy who spoke a monologue from a New York stage while twirtling a rope. His name was Will Rogers. He is remembered for saying, “I don’t tell jokes. I just watch politicians and report what they do and say.” (That’s not exactly what he said, but I’m 74 and my memory is slipping. But it’s close.)

Now who’s having a senior moment? You used the same Poignant Search Term of the Day yesterday.

Dammit! I knew that kind of crap would start happening as I got closer to 50…

However, it irks me that “Candorville” sneaks in through the back door the subtle slam at Obama: “just as inexperienced.” No: Palin is way more inexperienced than Obama, and her experience generally is at nowhere near the level of Obama’s. That “fair and balanced” little jab is baseless.

I’m sure that was a momentary language lapse on the part of the Candorville guy – the strip is decidedly left-leaning.

“Experienced” is a matter of definition anyway. They’re twisting the Rove-ian knob on parsing that as hard as they can.
Unlike other jobs, it’s not as if an “inexperienced” President is gonna accidentally fill out the wrong form one day and suddenly Montana belongs to Canada… it’s a matter of character, intelligence, and life experience, not what you’ve done in any specific job.
Of course, these days the country is too far gone for it to matter who’s in the big chair, so I say go ahead and vote for the cute one.
