Quest Fulfilled At Last

Posted on | December 10, 2005 at 9:49 pm | 11 Comments

Remeber this post back from October where I was asking if anyone knew where I could buy some annatto seed in the Denver area? Well, today I finally found some at the Whole Foods Market that just opened up at Belmar. I was about to give up, as I had not even found any at a Mexican market I found. But Whole Foods, which is gigantic, seems to have everything under the sun. I’m impressed.

Latre.

Did not see your original post, but, unbelievably, we do have annatto dye made from the seeds :D

I love shopping at Whole Foods, but around here I’ve heard it referred to as “Whole Paycheck” because it’s so expensive.

It’s the reason cheddar cheese is orange. We bought it for dying cheese in our Great Medieval Food Experiments.

Did you ever tell us why you need annatto seed?

You vegetarians (enlightened lot though you are) just wouldn’t understand. Look here.

Oh yeah – loves me some o’ that pibil puerco! You probably remember the little Mexican restaurant on the corner that a bunch of us went to – they’ve got a fine example of same…

Jeff, I do remember the place, but I don’t remember seeing pibil puerco on the menu, or I might’ve ordered it.

Bill, let me know if Marie makes it and how it comes out, and if you have any advice. I will be hopefully be trying it soon.

For an entertaining demonstration of the recipe being made, check out the 10 Minute Cooking School on the Once Upon A Time In Mexico DVD.

Well, Puerco Pibil sounds great if you leave out the pork butt.

That kind of defeats the purpose. It’s not like you can stick eggplant or soy in there and get anything close to the same effect. Heck, it wouldn’t be close even if you subsitituted chicken or beef.
